Susan Reid of Thompson Rivers University (TRU) of Architectural and Engineering Technology’s is doing a study on a building envelope problem which is very common in Canada, especially in the native communities up north, where usually many people live together in a small building, thus creating a high humidity and having cold outside temperatures. The performance of wood-based wall assemblies in resisting mold growth under high humidity conditions.

- She is putting a 4×4 shed together with different wall assemblies:

Our NDW (Naturally Different Wall)

CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) from Structurlam, insulated with Steico Universal

The trailer wall is the standard, traditionally framed wall with poly and Mineral Wool as insulation

SIP panel

The idea is to find a wall assembly that allows permeation of moisture yet being air tight. About two thirds through the study (3 weeks remaining), Susan found amazing results, which confirm our theory. The traditionally framed and trailer wall showed significant mold, where the CLT and NDW had very little and NO mold AT ALL.

Reid’s conclusion: “At the end of the two month research period, I expect to see practical, visible results validating my initial theoretical choices for commercially available wood-based wall constructions that will resist mold-growth more effectively than standard framed systems under high relative humidity conditions.”

Woodpecker Timberframing is now COR Certified. This Certificate of Recognition (COR) program is available to all members of the ACSA from owner/operators to large corporations, and is administered by the Alberta Construction Safety Association. The courses require seven days of training.

Here are some facts:

To be able to bid on most government jobs or just large projects, COR is now required. Not many smaller sized companies have COR.

Woodpecker Timberframing is one of the very few companies Canada wide that is COR certified. It is a safety certification which has to get renewed by an external auditor every three years but an internal audit has to be sent in annually.

Woodpecker has a safety consultant on staff. The Safety Consultant and the President of Woodpecker Timberframing are both fully certified COR auditors and make sure the company complies to the highest safety standards in the industry.

All employees have to participate to achieve the certification and maintain it by filling out daily hazard assessment sheets, do site inspections, fall protection plans, perform regular safety checks on vehicles and equipment, at all times wear their personal protective equipment as well as specialized protective equipment which woodpecker supplies etc….. They get send to special safety trainings regularly such as: fall protection training, scaffolding course, WHMIS, heavy equipment operator training, first aid etc.

The company holds regular safety meetings and the foremen hold their tail gate meetings with their crews. Woodpecker achieved an over 90% score in their certification. We are waiting for a final confirmed number.

COR includes the company has:

A safety policy and manual in places

Trains their employees in safety

Makes sure all paperwork for safe work (see above under what employees have to do) is in place and filled out on a daily base.

Makes sure all equipment and tools are maintained and serviced regularly and comply with the latest safety standards

Holds regular meetings to discuss issues, latest updates on safe work practices and procedures, train employees on new equipment, discuss site and work conditions etc.

Safe work procedures and safe job practices are in place. These make sure power tools, equipment and machinery are used in a proper, safe way and tasks are performed safely.

And much more…..

WoodPecker is proud to bring you a new type of wood-based ecological building material from Germany.

Our Wall-System is composed of natural wood fiber which has naturally occurring thermal and insulating properties in addition to vapor permeability, creating a comfortable environment for you and your family.

The diagram below shows WoodPecker’s wall sample and how the natural wood-fiber board acts as a windproof layer, thus preventing thermal bridging. Simply stated, we wrap your walls and roof in wood-fiber creating an insulating shell. This kind of structure also lends itself to renovations. Siding can be removed and fiber-board can then be added to create a windproof insulating barrier.

About Passive Homes

A Passive Home is an energy efficient home, which preserves energy consumption, making it more green and eco-friendly. It’s not solely used for homes. It can be applied to apartment buildings and office buildings as well. A Passive home is designed with high quality insulation, high efficiency heat ventilation and air-tight high performance windows. A Passive home is affordable to construct and maintain.

Cost Effective

By increase the energy-efficiency and decreasing your energy consumption, you will keep money in your pocket. This is done through efficiently insulating your home. Make use of your home’s ability to store and release heat instead of running expensive air-conditioners and heating systems. Efficiency means added value to your home not to mention sustainability. A healthy comfortable home for the whole family.

It provides building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance.

LEED® promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health:
